The History Of Cola
The Transformation Moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1870, Dr. John Stith Pemberton continued his success with Pemberton's French Wine Coca, well through the early 1880s. In 1886, three important events influenced a major evolution of Dr. Pemberton’s original health tonic.
Atlanta officially legislated alcohol prohibition, making it the first major city to fall victim to the United States temperance movement. Dr. Pemberton was forced to continue with his formula for the non-alcoholic, coca-based alternative.
1886 marked the emergence of the drink’s new name and logo, devised by Pemberton’s associate, Frank Mason Robinson. Coca-Cola: The Temperance Drink. The name Coca-Cola referenced of course the blend of the coca plant and kola nut. The new formula was first sold at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta.
One final event, actually a mistake, was that made at Jacob’s Pharmacy. A young soda jerk accidentally mixed the Coca-Cola syrup with carbonated water instead of regular water. The beverage was perceived as more refreshing and its popularity flourished. Dr. Pemberton sold his Coca-Cola formula to business tycoon Asa G. Candler in 1888, the same year of his passing.
