The History Of BRC

Built On Innovation
Miller continued his innovative means over the next eight years at the Royal Crown Cola Company. In 1980, he developed the first caffeine-free soft drink, Royal Crown 100. Three years after, Mr. Miller formulated a new version of Diet Rite Cola, free of salt, caffeine, and sugar—the first of its kind. W. T. Miller’s creativity and progressive approach within the industry was properly rewarded in 1986, when he received the highest beverage industry award; the Beverage World Hall of Fame award. Two years after, in 1988, Mr. Miller retired from Royal Crown as the company’s chief chemist and production manager after 51 years of dedication.

On May 10, 1989 at the age of 75, W. T. Miller, his wife Katherine, and youngest son Ben would ensure that Miller’s creativity, customer satisfaction, and spirit within the art of beverage creation continued into the future. Beverage Research Center of Columbus, Georgia was founded. As a company, BRC would help the small bottler and entrepreneur compete with the larger, mainstream beverage companies. BRC provided top quality products, industry expertise, and dedication to those sharing the passion of providing the public with great taste.

In 1990, BRC developed a complete line of flavored and cola beverages for Mr. Fred Adamany, who was prior president and owner of the largest Royal Crown franchise. This line of beverages was called Old Towne Flavors. In 1992 W. T. Miller developed the first sports drink without sodium for mid-active people who did not require the sodium found in sports drinks on the market. The drink was sweetened with 50% fructose and 50% sucrose for a high sweet perception with less sweetener. The beverage was isotonic for quick absorption and lightly carbonated; it was called Enduro.

BRC also became the worldwide supplier of Virgin Cola for 15 years beginning in 1994, when the company formulated the Virgin Cola beverage for Sir Richard Branson of the Virgin Record fame.
