The History Of BRC
Beginning Of A Legacy W. T. Miller was hired in March 1937 as a chief chemist for the Chero-Cola Company of Columbus, Georgia. Working with Rufus Kamm, both chemists worked on the Nehi flavor line as well as Royal Crown Cola. Mr. Miller began providing an innovative mind set early on in his career with the company.
His first implementation was shipping the flavor concentrates to other bottles without adding the sugar and water. The initiative saved the company money in freight cost and space, as the sugar and water would be added at the bottling plant. In the realm of soft drink bottling, flat-top beverage canning had been available only to beer manufactures until 1954. In this year, W. T. Miller oversaw the construction of the first soft drink aluminum canning plant in the world. The Chero-Cola Company would be the first to introduce soft drinks in cans.
In 1958, Miller’s next major contribution began as favor to his friend’s daughter, who enjoyed Royal Crown Cola, but was diabetic and could not tolerate the sugar. Mr. Miller set off to formulate the first sugar free soft drink, using a sweetener combination that was perceived as sweet as the full-sugar original. The first diet soda was born—Diet Rite Cola.
